> In Memoriam -- Vicki Pendley

Geez, has it been four years already since our good friend and neighbor, Vicki Pendley, passed away? We think of her every time we go by her old house, just six doors away, and especially in early December. Many have had dreams and other energetic connections with Vic's energy deposit in the last few years. For instance, Jo and I each had lucid dreams in which we talked to Vic about her transition experience. She told me that she could never fully describe it to me, and besides, I'd find out for myself (laughing gregariously at me!). Ever the Sumafi I mused upon awakening.

So here's a salute to Vic, whose humor, steadfast attention to detail, grit, and determination helped get the Elias forum off and running in the early days. If any of you have had dreams or other connections you'd like to share, please send them to us, and we'll include them in a future edition of this newsletter. In the mean time, here's a link to her memorial page in the Library.

> Volunteers Needed!

Many of you remember the wonderful Elias index that Bobbi Houle began 7-8 years ago. She had to stop that work when she assumed lead transcriber duties after Vicki Pendley passed in 2001. Bobbi’s index cover sessions 2-500 (session 1 was not recorded). Luana Ring came along, and continued Bobbi’s work and did sessions 501-682. So it’s time to ask for someone who would like to contribute to the Elias forum to step up and continue this important work. These overviews become a valuable resource in the Library, and also are used in each Transcript as keywords of local and Internet search engines.

If you are interested in contributing to the Elias forum legacy projects, please contact Paul H. at helfrich@eliasforum.org

> New Spanish Section in Progress

Thanks to the hard work of Olga Zuvic, Crizi Poust, George DeMello, and Gerhard Fuchs we’re working on adding a Spanish section to the Elias forum website. As most know, Spanish is spoken by more folks than English, so this work will make Elias available to hundreds of millions of potential new readers.

Olga and George are doing most of the translation work, and Gerhard generously sent us some HTML versions of George’s work from his website, making the workload a bit easier. So many thanks to all of you!

> Archive Project Updates

The DVD Archive is one of those “behind the scenes” projects whose goal is to ensure that the legacy of the Elias forum continues long after we’re gone. At last count, Mary had recorded over 1,800 sessions on videotape! Since DVDs take up less space, we purchased a DVD recorder last March, and began to transfer the ’95 sessions from Ron and Cathy Churchman’s video archive. We’ve finished through session 464.

The 1995 transcripts are one third done, as we have finished through session 21. That means only 42 more to go!

Gems of the Month

The Gem of the Month is a regular feature that provides an excerpt from a recent transcript that captures a snapshot of essential Elias.

This month’s gems are taken from the recent group session in Brattleboro, Vermont:

DANIIL: “In fighting fear we perpetuate it, so what other beneficial habit is next to fear that will alleviate fear?”

ELIAS: “Appreciation. Appreciation neutralizes fear, but genuine appreciation not artificial.”

DANIIL: “Appreciation as in appreciation of one’s self as well as appreciation of others?”

ELIAS: “Yes. But as we discussed earlier, appreciation is an unfamiliar action to many of you. Therefore, it is advisable that you begin in increments. For the point is not to overwhelm yourselves, and also not to snare yourselves or trap yourselves in a manner in which you are attempting to generate an appreciation and in a moment, if you are unsuccessful, that you immediately discount yourself and perpetuate this devaluing of yourself.

“Fear is an expression of powerlessness. Therefore, the point would not to be reinforcing that but to be interrupting it with something that can become familiar to you, although it is unfamiliar initially. This is the reason that it is significant to practice with acknowledgment and appreciation to acknowledge what you have accomplished, acknowledge what you ARE doing – credit yourselves not other individuals.” [session 1861, October 22, 2005]

ELLA: “The difference between appreciation and affection is that affection is unique about a person and appreciation is allowance?”

ELIAS: “No. Affection is a genuine expression. It is an emotional expression. Affection is a signal, a feeling, that is associated with an emotional communication. Affection is associated with attraction, and in that, it is also associated with preferences. It is a feeling with an emotional communication. Appreciation is not an emotional communication.”

ELLA: “If I appreciate you, don’t I feel good about you? That is an emotion.”

ELIAS: “You attach the affection with the appreciation and therefore you feel.”

ELLA: “So from where you are, you don’t experience emotions, and you can still appreciate us for what we are.”

ELIAS: “Quite, yes. But remember, emotion is a very powerful communication within you and it is also a basic element of your reality. Therefore, it is natural for you to express and associate feelings and emotional communications with many of your expressions.” [session 1861, October 22, 2005]

Monthly Musings - The Ten Beliefs Systems: The Senses

Last month we explored the belief system of perception. This month we continue with an exploration of the seventh of ten core belief systems that Elias introduced in March 1999: the senses.

Digests of Essential Elias relationships (interpersonal/intrapersonal = other/self)
Digests of Essential Elias duplicity (morality/ethics)
Digests of Essential Elias sexuality (sexuality/gender/orientation/preference)
Digests of Essential Elias truth (relative truths/Absolute Truth)
Digests of Essential Elias emotion (emotional/feeling)
Digests of Essential Elias perception (perceptual/attention)
Digests of Essential Elias the senses (inner/physical sensing)
Digests of Essential Elias religious/spirituality (exoteric/esoteric)
Digests of Essential Elias scientific/elements of physical reality (scientific/rational)
Digests of Essential Elias physical creation of the universe, including accidents and coincidences (creation mythos)

The belief systems about our senses is very important, because they color how we perceive our officially accepted mass reality, and further, what constitutes authentic evidence of “the truth” (yes, we are still in the midst of the truth wave!). For example, modern science is still entrenched in a materialistic approach that defines reality only in terms of the five physical senses as viewed from third person perspectives. That is, science reduces all sensing to its, things, processes, or objects “out there” somewhere that can be verified, cross-checked, and described in terms of third person “it” languages like mathematics.

Now, that’s all well and good, and materialist science has produced many breakthroughs in medicine, industry, and our overall quality of life. But it still deals with only a limited slice of All-That-Is, one that does NOT include what Seth (1) and Elias call inner senses. What’s missing, then, are the first person “I” perspectives of direct experience that includes outer AND inner senses. So it's critical to explore how the outer and inner senses work in concert to create our perception, to create our individual and collective realities.

Though Seth originally introduced nine inner senses, his distinctions tend to confuse beginners with subtle shades of gray. So Elias, in typical Sumafi fashion, has simplified them into three fundamental types:

Fundamental inner senses:

- conceptualization

- differential time

- empathic

Elias has presented several additional inner senses to date:

Secondary/complementary inner senses: (2)

- clairvoyance

- telepathy

- tone

- touch

So when we explore our inner senses, we want to be sure that we include our five physical senses, since they complement each other. In a general way, think of inner senses as innate to subjective awareness, and outer senses as innate to objective awareness. So our inner senses are a way to bridge objective and subjective awareness. When they work in coherent fashion, the result is a kind of unity awareness similar to classical notions of satori, enlightenment, moksha, and a zillion other names in the world’s esoteric and gnostic traditions.

Here’s Elias with some introductory comments about our inner senses:

ELIAS: “Through your inner senses, you may connect with vibrational tones. Everything within your perception incorporates a vibrational tone. Your table incorporates a vibrational tone. Every molecule, every atom, every unit of consciousness incorporates a vibrational tone. Therefore, within your inner senses your ‘objective,’ so to speak, would be to be connecting with an individual scenario of connection of vibrational tones, of which there are more than you may count.” [session 79, March 17, 1996]

ELIAS: “It is quite natural for you to be engaging these inner senses, as you are using these continuously. You only are not noticing. These inner senses are exercised within your normal workings of your manifestation continuously, although you hold no thought process connected with them. They may be likened to your heart beating or your breath. You do not walk through your day and continuously think of your heart beating or tell yourself to breathe. You automatically accomplish these functions. You also automatically accomplish the usage of your inner senses. You just do not recognize as you are using these senses, this being why I have offered you exercises to be engaging these inner senses.” [session 162, April 06, 1997]

ELIAS: “As I have stated previously, I have not separated the inner senses into categories of nine senses, and I have not differentiated them so extensively as others [i.e. Seth] may present them to you; for your inner senses, although in some aspects are clearly defined from each other, they are not quite as explicitly defined, in your terms, as your outer senses. Your outer senses function precisely and may not be confused with each other. You do not confuse your sense of touch with your sense of sight. They are clearly defined. Your inner senses are softer, so to speak, although they also may be differentiated precisely. It is unnecessary to be classifying these senses overly specifically.” [session 166 April 20, 1997]

ELIAS: “It shall serve you well to be practicing with these inner senses. Just as you may identify many elements of your environment and your reality by your outer senses without thought process, you may identify much subjective activity and bring this into an objective awareness with practice of these inner senses. This shall also serve to lessen your confusion as you allow yourself to widen your awareness, as you move into this shift.” [session 171, May 04, 1997]

ELIAS: “You have only three [fundamental inner senses]. It is unnecessary to boggle yourselves with all of these categorizations. You hold your empathic sense, your conceptualization sense, and your sense of differential time. These be all you need to be connecting with all of your subjective activity and allowing for your understanding of bleed-through information.” [session 205, August 10, 1997]

ELIAS: (Chuckling) “... you have designed a physical manifestation that incorporates MANY avenues of communication! Emotion is one, and as I have stated previously, all of your senses are other avenues of communication. This is their function. The function of emotion is a communication. The function of all of your senses, inner and outer senses, is communication. The function of impulses and impressions is communication. You incorporate communication in your physical body expressions. (Pause) It is an intricate expression of your BEING in this physical dimension.” [session 764, January 24, 2001]

So we can connect our inner senses to another one of Elias’ bridging concepts: avenues of communication. They are a way that subjective awareness communicates with, through, and as objective awareness. Other avenues include impressions, impulses, dreams, body symptoms, imagination, etc. So the inner senses are very important, sort of like a central nervous system through which the subtle inner self translates itSelf into physical manifestation.

Here’s more from Elias on each of the three inner senses. Let’s begin with conceptualization, one of my favorites:

ELIAS: “Language within any physical focus is quite limiting, this being why I encourage you all to conceptualize; and know that within widening comes an awareness of knowing, to which words within your language become unnecessary, for the reality is known.” [session 99, June 09, 1996]

ELIAS: “In conceptualization you may attempt to disassociate yourself with your form and your ‘thingness,’ and allow yourself the motion and movement of action within energy. In this, you may choose a concept. You may choose an idea. You may choose a thought, and you may focus upon this and shed your imagery or your camouflage and be the action of the thought or idea or concept.” [session 162, April 06, 1997]

ELIAS: “Not all of conceptualization shall automatically make sense to you. I have offered you the exercise to be practicing engaging this inner sense. You are not engaging interpretation of this inner sense. You are merely exercising the sense itself, just as you may engage outer senses without interpretation. You need not understand always what you are experiencing, to be experiencing. If you are experiencing your sense of touch, you may disengage your sense of sight, therefore not allowing yourself knowledge of what you touch, and you may still engage your sense of touch. You may not have an interpretation or an understanding of this sense data, but you are exercising the sense.” [session 166, April 20, 1997]

ELIAS: “You view an object, and you express to the other individual in response that this object is a cloud or this object is a flower, but as you are viewing within the experience, the term flower or cloud does not seem quite adequate to be describing what you are actually viewing, for they do not entirely fit what you view within physical focus. In this, what you ARE viewing is more of the lack of separation of yourself and these elements. They are not what they appear, just as you are not what you appear, as we have stated previously within the context of this session. They are elements that are projections from you. Therefore, they are essentially what you may term part of you.

“They are not separate entities. This be the reason that they seem clear, but slightly unfocused. They seem within your visualization to hold a crispness and a vividness, but they also simultaneously seem unfocused. They do not hold the solidity that actual objects hold, but they also hold more brilliance. This be the quality of vividness that you offer yourself in these types of visualization. In this, this is allowing yourself to view other elements of yourself, knowing that these elements are parts of yourself or aspects of yourself that you may also choose to be exploring.

“Now; this shall lead us once again into the area of viewing the aspects of you. We have discussed all of the you’s of you, which are aspects of you, but there are more aspects of you than merely the you’s of you, for as I have stated previously, all that you view within this physical dimension is a projection of you. There is no separation. It merely appears in your perception, within each moment of linear time, that you are separated and that you hold distinction as entities, separate and apart from any other type of entity.

“The vastness of what you are, in many respects within physical focus, is incomprehensible to you. This is also the reason that within the early throes of these sessions I have been encouraging of individuals to be engaging their conceptual sense, for this shall lend more of an ease in understanding to you of many of the concepts that I present to you, remembering that all that you designate as concepts are in actuality reality. They are merely not a reality to you within your perception.” [session 333, October 19, 1998]

ELIAS: “Conceptualization is quite a different action from your empathic sense. Your empathic sense, as you are aware, is a mergence with any other element of consciousness, and creates an allowance for you to be objectively assimilating the experience of that aspect of consciousness, regardless of how it may be manifest.

“Now; within conceptualization, this is an allowance of mergence with action; an enabling of yourself, in a manner of speaking – as you identify yourself within this physical dimension – to be merging with the action of a creation.

(Intently) “Concepts are a creation, and in this, as you allow yourself to be merging with the action of the creation – or the concept – you experience the action itself, and this offers you a different type of information. This offers you the ability to be creating different elements objectively within your physical focus without instruction, so to speak.” [session 506, November 24, 1999]

Here’s more on differential time:

ELIAS: “This sense of differential time allows you the ability to disassociate yourself with your created time framework within this particular dimension of physical focus. You in actuality use this inner sense very often. You engage this inner sense each time that you involve yourself with your dream imagery. You also, in what you classify as daydreaming, employ this inner sense. You, during other altered states of consciousness, automatically involve this inner sense. You do not recognize your usage of this inner sense, but your consciousness is intimately familiar with practicing this inner sense.” [session 166 April 20, 1997]

ELIAS: “This inner sense [of differential time] is not necessarily merely the identification of differences within time frameworks or sensing differences within time frameworks, but the actual allowance of yourself to be recognizing the flexibility of time and your ability to be manipulating it; that time is an invention or a creation of your perception within this physical dimension, and that it is quite elastic and that it is also quite changeable, and may vary considerably between individuals.

“You look to the element of time as being an absolute, as you look at many elements within your physical dimension as absolutes, but I express to you that it is not an absolute.

“In this, it may be quite changeable and bendable by each individual, regardless that you may be participating in an officially accepted reality within a particular physical dimension. Even within the guidelines of your officially accepted reality, the configuration of linear time may be altered.” [session 506 November 24, 1999]

Here’s more on the empathic inner sense:

ELIAS: “You may use your empathic sense to be connecting with aspects of yourself which are affecting of yourself, and you may also be using this sense to be connecting with yourself. Each element, each molecule, each cell, each atom that you incorporate within your physical expression possesses consciousness. In this, it experiences. You may use your empathic sense to be connecting with the experience of your physical existence, if you are so choosing, or if you are needing to be affecting of a challenge within this area. [session 57, November 26, 1995]

ELIAS: “You may experience empathy, for another individual or creature, for whatever they may be experiencing. This is not to say that you are choosing to empathically experience what they are experiencing. If you are viewing a creature or an individual which you view to be suffering, you may feel quite sorry for this creature or individual. You may incorporate empathy for them, but you may not wish to be occupying their space, and being them; (pause) this being an element of your fear, and your lack of trust, and your isolation of self, which each of you holds. I will be quite willing to say to you that if you are viewing a disaster, and a broken body of another individual, you may be willing to be helpful, but you will not be willing to lie down in their space and be experiencing their trauma! This is empathic.” [session 57, November 26, 1995]

ELIAS: “You have allowed yourselves the opportunity to be experiencing your empathic sense, which allows you to disassociate with your physical being and merge with another physical entity. You have also been presented with the opportunity to be experiencing your beingness and its intricacies through our exercise in clarity.” [session 162, April 06, 1997]

To come full circle, whenever we practice using these inner senses, it’s important to remain grounded in our physical body and senses. This is why Elias offered the clarity exercise to complement, balance, and harmonize any work we do with our inner senses, as they inevitably lead to altered states. (As a point of interest: Elias’ clarity practice is a variation of Seth’s Practice Element 11 from The "Unknown" Reality, Vol. 2, p. 394, which serves the same grounding function when learning to work with dreams and altered states in waking state).

Here’s the Elias clarity exercise:

ELIAS: “Within the beginning elements of this exercise, I shall be asking you to be holding your field of vision, not closing eyes; for you are turning to this attention, this station, this channel. You are noticing and allowing clarity of this channel. Therefore, the purpose is not to be altering your state.

“In this, I will ask you to sit comfortably. Focus upon any given object within your room, but do not concentrate intensely upon this object. Allow for your vision to normally encompass the entirety of the room, with one main focal point. Do not strain, and do not force yourselves to be concentrating very hard upon any given object. In this, now tune your consciousness to your senses. Notice your vision. Allow your vision to be as clear as it may possibly be. Tune to your hearing. Notice all of the sounds that occur. Many sounds are occurring that you automatically tune out and pay little attention to. Notice your body, your physical feelings, your body temperature. Notice your sense of touch. The air touches your skin continuously. Your clothing touches your skin. These are all elements that are a part of the clarity of your focus, to which you pay little attention to. Notice smells. You pay little attention to your sense of smell throughout your individual, mundane day. Notice your sense of taste. You view that if you are not consuming something, you are not tasting anything. Your senses are highly tuned, and respond regardless. They incorporate continuous stimulation. You only choose to not be clear upon these senses.

“Take a moment to concentrate, unstrained, upon the activity of all of these senses that you incorporate throughout every moment of your physical focus. (Here there is a ninety second pause)

“Now, I will be instructing each of you to be closing your eyes and allowing your attention to drift. Do not be focusing upon your outer senses, so to speak. Allow yourself to feel comfortable, and calm, and quiet. (Here there is a thirty second pause) Enough drifting!

“You will notice that with your eyes closed, you will drift. You have experienced, within your attempts at meditation at times, difficulty in holding your focus. You experience, much of your time within your dream state, an inability to hold your focus and manipulate within that focus. This exercise of tuning your directed attention, your consciousness which is tuned to this channel, will be very helpful to you in instructional areas of developing your ability to be manipulating within alternate channels. Altered states, as you term these, are all alternate channels. If you hold the ability to consciously manipulate within the consciousness that holds your attention, you will more easily learn to manipulate and understand within alternate channels of consciousness. Therefore, throughout this week, until our next meeting, I shall offer you the opportunity for what you would term to be homework! I shall be instructing you to be practicing this exercise three times within each of your days. You may incorporate this exercise at any given moment, for your eyes are open, and you are attentive to all those individuals around you and also any activity that you may be engaging, for you are tuning your consciousness more clearly. You are not drifting. You are not placing yourself into an altered state. Therefore, this exercise will not be interrupting of your normal activity.

“In this, incorporate one time for initiating this exercise within your evening time, while you are relaxed at your home, individually. Therefore, you may follow your directed “tuning in” to your attention channel by closing your eyes and allowing yourself to drift. In this, while you are allowing yourself to drift, you may incorporate this action briefly, only within a time element to be noticing those events that are occurring. This may be color flashes, it may be feelings, it may be scenes. You may incorporate visualizations. You may incorporate mental images, as you term these. You may find yourself incorporating thoughts “slinging” by you rapidly. Notice what occurs.

“Do not concentrate intensely upon the experience. It is only an exercise. It is unnecessary to be very serious and directed! You may incorporate this as fun, and it may be brief. It is not necessary for you to be setting aside hours of your time and very directedly concentrating on accomplishing! It is more important for you to be tuning consciously, eyes open, to the awareness that you are familiar with; for as you learn to be directed, and manipulating within that directedness, you shall also learn to be directing within alternate realities.

“I express to you that you may be manipulating within your clarity; for what you have experienced presently within this exercise is only noticing. As our week progresses and you are incorporating this exercise, you may attempt to manipulate these senses. Allow the clarity of your hearing, and then intentionally turn it off. Allow the clarity of your sense of smell, and then disengage. Allow yourselves the opportunity to view your own ability to manipulate your own consciousness and its functions; for in this, you may much more easily recognize how to be manipulating when encountering different events within alternate focuses.”

Exercises: find out more about the clarity exercise.

All of which leads us to this month’s practice. Depending where you are, and what exercises you’ve done, simply begin with the clarity exercise, and NIRAA your physical senses. Simply notice which beliefs predominate in our outer sensing experiences for a whole week. Repetition is important in setting concentration to the levels required to get results. So, simply notice what and how you sense when you do the clarity exercise. Just notice. Don’t identify or label or analyze. Just notice. Pay attention to what you sense! Don’t anticipate any big cosmic experience. Just get familiar with your physical senses and the feeling of being firmly awake, aware, and grounded in your body.

Then, during a second week pick one of Elias’ inner senses exercises from the list below:

> inner senses; empathic and conceptualization

> inner senses; conceptualization

> inner senses; differential time

Likewise, simply notice and identify beliefs related to the particularly inner sense your working on. Again, don’t expect any big cosmic altered states, though they may spontaneously manifest. If they do, just go with them as long as you are comfortable, and simply notice, again, what inner avenues of communication this particular inner sense may open up.

As usual, don’t go crazy, simply do the practice for 5-10 minutes throughout each day, and let it go at that. The basic idea, as always, is to notice self in relation to others, and be consistent with the practices. With a little persistence, you will begin to notice how important the belief system of senses are in understanding how we actually create all our reality.

Reminder: even though we're separating the three main inner senses, they all work together, blend together in our inner perception, just as our five physical senses merge to create a single perception in the waking state. We begin by separating them for only for study and practice, but ultimately learn to notice them as aspects of our overall perception.

End Notes:

(1) Paul’s note: a reference to the work of Seth/Jane Roberts, who originally presented the concept of (nine) inner senses in The Seth Material, (1970), Chapter 19, The Inner Senses – What They Are and How to Use Them.

Seth/Jane offered the following types of inner senses:

  1. Inner Vibrational Touch
  2. Psychological Time
  3. Perception of Past, Present, and Future
  4. Conceptual Sense
  5. Cognition of Knowledgeable Essence
  6. Innate Knowledge of Basic Reality
  7. Expansion or Contraction of the Tissue Capsule
  8. Disentanglement from Camouflage
  9. Diffusion by the Energy Personality

(2) Paul’s note: I make this distinction based upon the following:

PAUL: “Just to finish up on my inner senses questions, I wanted to make sure ... to date, you have also discussed four other characteristics of inner senses [besides conceptualization, differential time, and empathic] that you’ve termed telepathy, tone and touch, and clairvoyance, and I just wanted to make sure that I haven’t missed any. Are those seven basically what you’ve offered thus far?”

ELIAS: “Yes, you are correct.”

PAUL: “Thank you.” [session 506, November 24, 1999]

Elias has been clear that there are three broad spectrums in which our inner senses function; empathic, conceptual, and time-based. The additional four aspects – clairvoyance, telepathy, tone, and touch – are subsets of these main three spectrums and are thus complementary, not separate, aspects of our inner senses.

At this time in our world we are all asking questions of ourselves and others such as, “What is my purpose?” and “What is truth?” and “What is death?” We are questioning the validity of our governments and our religious institutions. The Shift: A Time of Change offers the answer to these questions.

First time author David Tate has waded through the voluminous information delivered by Elias/Mary Ennis to compile a GEM of the Elias material and has shaped The Shift: A Time of Change into a definitive reference guide of the most popular topics of the Elias material.

All of the readers of the popular Seth/Jane Roberts books will identify with the information delivered by Elias/Mary Ennis in that it is channelled material. Like Seth, Elias is an essence who brings forth explanations of our world, ourselves and that we create our reality. The mantra, “You create your own reality,” was originated by Seth. Seth further explained that our beliefs create our reality. However, Elias clarifies that in order to change our realities we must accept our beliefs.

In The Shift, Elias delves deep into the fundamental questions we all have concerning truth, karma, beliefs systems and God.

“You are moving to the creation of a new expression of your physical reality as you know it. In this, not only your technology shall advance and be created differently, but all of your reality shall be altered and shall be different.”
